Railway recruitment through Civil Services Examinations refers to the process through which individuals are selected for various high-level administrative positions in Indian Railways. These positions are filled through exams that are conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which is responsible for organizing the Civil Services Examination.

Here’s an easy breakdown of how this process works:

1. What is the Civil Services Examination (CSE)?

The Civil Services Examination is a competitive exam held by UPSC to recruit individuals into various prestigious government positions, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Railways (among others).

 

2. Railway Recruitment via Civil Services Examination

Indian Railways has its own set of positions that are filled through the Civil Services Examination. The main group of railway positions filled through this exam falls under the Indian Railway Services. These include:

  • Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS)
  • Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS)
  • Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS)
  • Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE)
  • Indian Railway Stores Service (IRSS)

These are high-ranking, administrative roles that require a significant level of expertise and leadership skills.

3. How Does the Recruitment Process Work?

Step 1: Eligibility Criteria

To appear for the Civil Services Examination, candidates must meet certain eligibility criteria:

  • Age Limit: Typically, candidates should be between 21 and 32 years of age (with some relaxation for reserved categories).
  • Educational Qualifications: A candidate must have a degree from a recognized university. There is no specific requirement for candidates to have studied a particular subject, but they should possess general knowledge and analytical skills.
  • Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India.

Step 2: The Examination Process

The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims): This is the first stage, and it consists of two objective-type papers – General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The Prelims are designed to test the candidate’s basic knowledge of general topics and their ability to think logically.
  2. Main Examination (Mains): Candidates who pass the Prelims move on to the Mains, which is a more detailed written examination. It has several papers, including:
    • General Studies Papers
    • Optional Subject Paper (candidates choose one subject from a list of options)
    • Language Papers (English and an Indian language)

    The Mains exam tests in-depth knowledge of various subjects and the candidate’s writing and analytical skills.

  3. Interview (Personality Test): Candidates who qualify the Mains exam are called for an interview, which is a personality test. In this round, candidates are evaluated based on their overall personality, decision-making abilities, and suitability for public service.

Step 3: Selection for Railways

  • Indian Railways is part of the Civil Services Exam: Based on the candidate’s rank in the exam, they are selected for various services, including the Indian Railways. The specific services are based on the preferences and the candidate’s rank.
  • Railway-Specific Positions: For example, those who get selected for the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) will manage operations, scheduling, and planning of trains. Those selected for the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) will be responsible for designing and maintaining railway infrastructure.

Once selected, candidates undergo training at various Railway training institutes, where they learn about the specific job responsibilities, policies, and systems related to their posts. After training, they are posted to various parts of India, depending on the requirement and their service area.
