Geographical Distribution of Railway Zones

BY ADMIN February 24, 2025

Indian Railways is divided into different regions known as railway zones. Each zone is like a big area that covers a group of states or parts of a state. The zones are responsible for managing the railway lines, stations, and services within their area.

There are 18 railway zones in total, and each zone is identified by a name, usually based on a city or a region. For example, the Northern Railway Zone is centered in Delhi, and the Southern Railway Zone is based in Chennai.

Each zone has a divisional structure, where a large zone is split into smaller divisions, and these divisions are responsible for smaller regions. For example, the Northern Railway zone has divisions like Delhi, Amritsar, and Lucknow.

Here’s the complete list of the 18 Railway Zones in India, along with their headquarters:

  1. Northern Railway (NR) – Headquarters: New Delhi
Covers: Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
  2. Western Railway (WR) – Headquarters: Mumbai
Covers: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
  3. Southern Railway (SR) – Headquarters: Chennai
Covers: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Telangana.
  4. Eastern Railway (ER) – Headquarters: Kolkata
Covers: West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Odisha.
  5. South Eastern Railway (SER) – Headquarters: Kolkata
Covers: West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and parts of Chhattisgarh.
  6. Central Railway (CR) – Headquarters: Mumbai
Covers: Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
  7. South Western Railway (SWR) – Headquarters: Hubli (Karnataka)
Covers: Karnataka, Goa, and parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
  8. South Coast Railway (SCoR) – Headquarters: Visakhapatnam
Covers: Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Tamil Nadu.
  9. North Eastern Railway (NER) – Headquarters: Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh)
Covers: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the northeastern states like Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
  10. North Western Railway (NWR) – Headquarters: Jaipur
Covers: Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Haryana and Punjab.
  11. East Central Railway (ECR) – Headquarters: Hajipur (Bihar)
Covers: Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
  12. South East Central Railway (SECR) – Headquarters: Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh)
Covers: Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Odisha.
  13. North Central Railway (NCR) – Headquarters: Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh)
Covers: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan.
  14. Western Central Railway (WCR) – Headquarters: Kota (Rajasthan)
Covers: Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
  15. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) – Headquarters: Guwahati (Assam)
Covers: The northeastern states like Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal.
  16. Eastern Central Railway (ECR) – Headquarters: Hajipur (Bihar)
Covers: Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
  17. Kochi Metro Railway – Headquarters: Kochi
Covers: The metro railway network in Kochi (part of the urban transport system).
  18. Andaman and Nicobar Islands Railway Zone (Proposed) – Expected to cover: Andaman and Nicobar Islands (currently under development).

This structure ensures that the operations of the Indian Railways are effectively managed across the vast geographical regions of the country!
